Facade of the Tomb of Philip II of Macedon, one of three Royal Tombs found at Aigai. In 336 BC Philip was assassinated in Aigais theatre and his son, Alexander the Great, was proclaimed king. In 1977, the burial sites of several kings of Macedon were uncovered, including the tomb of Philip II which had not been disturbed or looted, unlike so many of the other tombs there. The marble facade of the tomb is crowned with a lavish, mythic frieze depicting a hunting scene. The Marble tomb entrance is flanked by two pillars which support a Doric architrave and frieze with triglyphs and metopes.
