The Solferino Tower (first called the Malakoff Tower); built in 1859 on the Butte Montmartre in Paris; near a guinguette of the same name; rue des Rosiers (later named rue du Chevalier-de-la-Barre); has the current approximate location of the Sacre-Coeur Basilica. It was about 25 metres high and had four floors. The guinguette; which connected with the tower by a walkway; charged to admire the panorama from the top; where a long view allowed; it is said; to see up to 100 kilometres. During the War of 1870 (the siege of Paris by the Prussians); the two upper floors were removed so as not to serve as a marker for enemy guns. She was completely demolished in 1874. Kauffmann; published in'The Journal Illusre' No. 13 of March 28; 1875; shows the ruined tower; half destroyed; delivered to vagabonds; rodeurs and looters who are chasing by soldiers.
