Fishing. Fishing from a Coracle. This primitive boat was in use among the Britons at the time of Caesars invasion; and is still employed on the Severn; Towy; Teifi; and other Welsh rivers. It is a light oval craft; made of canvas stretched over a framework of interwoven rods; the whole rendered water-tight by a coating of tar or pitch. The ancient coracles were covered with horse or bullock hide. Modern Steam Carrier. The old-fashioned but picturesque sailing craft are rapidly giving place to steam drifters. The fish; packed in boxes with salt and ice; are taken in the trawlers boats or dories to the steam carrier; which is waiting; with steam up; to carry to market the silver harvest of the sea. Illustration for one of a set of cigarette cards on the subject of Past & Present issued by Wills in 1929.
