Close up of Stentor, a large ciliate found in lakes, ponds and streams throughout much of the world. Cilia can be seen lining its peristome which are used to draw bacteria and other organisms into its cytostome or mouth. It磗 macronucleus appears as a beaded chain. A large contractile vacuole can be seen on the right. This is an organ that is used to maintain the proper level of water within a protozoan. Recorded under Nomarski DIC with a horizontal field of view of approximately 500 microns.
