Rose aphids (Macrosiphum rosae) infesting a rose stem (Rosa sp.). An aphid is an insect that feeds on plants and it is a serious pest. There are around 4000 species distributed worldwide. The rose aphid is monophagous (it feeds only on rose plants). As it feeds, the aphid can transmit plant viruses, which sometimes kills the plant.
