Oronce Fine (1494-1555), French mathematician and cartographer. Fine was born at Briancon into a family of physicians and was educated at Paris. Although he graduated in medicine, he was attracted to mathematics and astronomy. He worked on several revisions to the value of pi and worked on practical geometry. With this he improved the cordiform (heart-shaped) map projection, atempting to reconcile the discovery of the New World with existing knowledge of the Orient. He was a writer of many books popularising mathematics and astronomy. This woodcut comes from van Opmeer's Opus chronographicum orbis universi, published at Antwerp in 1611.
