The image shows successive launches from a mountaintop (V), with a launch with sufficient velocity attaining orbital motion and circling the Earth completely. This image is from the English translation of 'A Treatise of the System of the World' (1728). This work was translated into English by the English physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Though the image is not by Newton, it shows the concept of gravity and orbital motion that he had developed, revolutionising physics.
