Polarized light micrograph of dopamine hydrochloride (trade names: Intropin, Revivan, etc.) crystals. It acts as a neurotransmitter and as a peripheral hormone, and plays a key role in the control of locomotion, reward-motivated behavior, learning, working memory, cognition, and emotion. In the brain, altered levels of dopamine activity are linked to Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, fibromyalgia, and amphetamine and cocaine addiction. It is a vasodilator agent: in the kidneys it increases sodium excretion and urine output (renal dopamine may contribute to hypertension); it reduces insulin production and the activity of lymphocytes; it reduces gastrointestinal motility; and it increases heart rate and cardiac contractility.
