Nikau palms (Palmae sapida), Punakaiki, South Island, New Zealand. The Maori used the nikau for a variety of purposes. The fronds were used for thatching and strips of the fronds were used for mats and bags. The trunk was used to make pots and storage containers. The center shoot was steamed and eaten.
