Aedes mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female aedes mosquito. Aedes is a genus of mosquitoes originally found in tropical and subtropical zones, but now found on all continents except Antarctica. The palps carry receptors which guide the mosquito to its host. The proboscis, composed of the labium and two labella, is used for feeding, and is the part responsible for the mosquito's sting. The Aedes mosquito is the vector for the several diseases. However, the male male doesn't bite, only the female drinks the blood of animals and thus transmits the disease.Only some species of this genus transmit serious diseases, including dengue fever, yellow fever, the Zika virus, and chikungunya.
