Light micrograph of cells of the adrenal gland cortex. The adrenal gland cortex (outer layer) produces hormones including sex hormones and hormones which have functions in regulating the body??? electrolytes and metabolism. The adrenal cortex cells (specifically those of the fasciculata zone) have a characteristic vacuolated or 'bubbly' appearance given to them by the abundant lipid (fatty) substances that they contain. The bubbly adrenal cells form small clusters in between capillaries (small blood vessels), the latter of which contain bright red coloured red blood cells. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 400x when printed at 10cm.
