Lake Dwellings (Pile dwellings - Pfahlbauten) and associated artefacts. Based on mid-19th century work of Swiss archaeologist Ferdinand Keller. Winter of 1853-54 was dry and water level in Lake Zurich fell. At Meilen dredging for land reclamation revealed ancient wooden piles driven into bed of lake; as well as stone hammers; axes; celts; etc. Engraving published London 1888. Continuous occupation of site from Stone Age through to Iron Age.
