Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of developing nerve cells (neurons) from the hippocampus of the brain growing in culture. The many-branched structures are axonal growth cones. These are highly dynamic and motile structures that explore the extracellular environment and determine the direction of growth of the axon, the process that passes information to other nerve cells. Different colours have been used to reflect the extending or retracting of protrusions over time.
