Kimbolton Castle, Huntingdonshire, the seat of the Duke of Manchester, 1870. Kimbolton, which takes its name from the Kym, a stream tributary to the river Ouse, is situated eleven miles south-west of the town of Huntingdon, eight miles north-west of St. Neots, standing on the border of Bedfordshire, about sixty miles from London...The seventh Duke, now possessing Kimbolton and the family honours, is William Drogo Montagu, born in 1823, who has been an officer in the Guards, and is reckoned a member of the Conservative party. The Duchess is a German lady, Baroness Louisa Frederica Augusta, daughter of the Count of Alten; and they have several children. Kimbolton Castle, rebuilt by the first Duke about the end of the seventeenth century, is a substantial square building of stone, with an embattled parapet and with a courtyard in the centre. It has an entrance portico supported by six pillars, with a flight of steps...it stands...in the level plain, and in the midst of a spacious park, well wooded and stocked with deer. The more ancient castle on this site was strongly fortified, and is celebrated as the residence of Queen Catherine of Arragon from her divorce from Henry VIII. till her death.
