Illustration of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) spacecraft flying by Callisto. The Juice spacecraft was launched on 14 April 2023 by the European Space Agency (ESA) and will embark on an eight-year journey to Jupiter and its icy moons. The solar wings are the largest ever flown on an interplanetary mission. The size is essential to generate sufficient power for the instruments and spacecraft so far from the Sun. The mission plans to study three large ocean-bearing moons; Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. The mission will study these moons as both planetary objects and possible habitats and explore Jupiters complex atmospheric environment to understand more about gas giants across the Universe. Juice will catch its first glimpse of ancient, cratered Callisto in June 2032 and make many flybys until a final one in 2034. During these close encounters, Juice will collect valuable scientific information about the moon.
