Foraminiferan fossils. Close-up of the fossilised remains of numerous foraminiferans. Foraminiferans are common marine plankton protists that form a calcareous shell. They can be very abundant and deposits of their remains have formed chalk rocks. Because many species require special conditions they are good index fossils, useful in geological and climatological studies.
