
Yacare caiman (Caiman yacare) feeding on a possum in the Cuiaba River. The yacare caiman, also known commonly as the jacare caiman, Paraguayan caiman, piranha caiman, red caiman, and southern spectacled caiman, is a species of caiman, a crocodilian in the family Alligatoridae. It is endemic to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. Yacare caiman feed primarily on aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates; particularly snails, molluscs, crustaceans and fish. Adult caimans take a wide variety of fish (especially piranha) and birds, with the occasional capybara being taken by larger individuals. Photographed in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil.
