Polarised light and phase contrast light micrograph of a crushed Arcella sp. amoeba (centre) and tiny two heliozoans (left). Arcella amoebae are usually found in freshwaters and mosses. They are characterised by their circular test with a hole in its centre from where pseudopods emerge. Heliozoans are a group of single-celled, freshwater protists characterised by their spherical body and long, radiating, stiff pseudopodia called axopodia (hair like arms). These axopodia are used for capturing food, movement, and sometimes attachment. Magnification: x186 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
