Modern sculpture Centauro by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj in the forum of the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii in Italy. This statue was gifted by the Polish sculptor following an exhibition of his work in the ruins of Pompeii. Centaurs were half-human half horse figures in Greek mythology. The Roman city of Pompeii, located in the Bay of Naples was ruined and buried under thick layers of ash during an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries.
