Lieut.-General Sir George Brown And His Staff: This Crimean War picture by Roger Fenton shows the General with arms folded seated among his aides. Sir George, whose long series of staff appointments made him something of a martinet, was bitterly condemned by The Times correspondent, Russell, for his rigid policy of pipe claying, close shaving, and tight stocking," but he endeared himself to his men by bravery in the field. British Warships In Balaclava Harbour -- Roger Fenton recorded this busy scene. The early war pictures of this photographer compel the greatest admiration, for it must have needed no ordinary determination to have campaigned in the 1850?™s with the fearsome apparatus that was then essential to the photographic process. Fenton had to employ a wet plate, for at that time even the moist collodion process was not available, being in the experimental stage. He was one of the pioneers of news photography, and his pictures were frequently employed as book illustrations, the prints being pasted into the volumes. A year after Fenton achieved his fine series of pictures in the Crimea, another photographer, F. Beato, took some equally detailed pictures of the ruins of buildings which had been destroyed in the Indian Mutiny.
