European Space Agencys (ESA) Biomass satellite launching aboard a Vega-C rocket from Europes Spaceport in in Kourou, French Guiana, on 29 April 2025. The Biomass mission is designed to provide vital information about the state of Earths forests and how they are changing, while also enhancing our understanding of the role forests play in the carbon cycle. It is the first satellite to carry a fully polarimetric P-band synthetic aperture radar for interferometric imaging. Due to the long wavelength of P-band, around 70 centimetres, the radar signal can slice through the whole forest layer to measure the biomass, meaning the woody trunks, branches and stems, which is where trees store most of their carbon. These measurements serve as a proxy for carbon storage, which is the primary goal of the mission.
