This marble statue shows the god Pan instructing the youth Daphnis in the playing of the panpipes. Pan is a figure from Greek mythology who was originally a pastoral god from Arcadia. He was believed to dwell in the mountains and forests of Greece and was considered the patron of shepherds. He is portrayed with the horns and legs of a goat and animalistic facial features. Daphnis was a Sicilian herdsman and the inventor of bucolic poetry. He pledged his love to a Naias-nymph but, after cheating on her with another woman, was blinded and fell to his death from a cliff. The bucolic poets sang of Daphnis in their idylls. The statue is housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
