Netherlands: The Last Supper. Oil on canvas painting by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (19 August 1621 - 29 September 1674), 1664. Van den Eeckhout was a student of Rembrandt and, like his mentor, he preferred using dark colours and contrasts with light. In this masterpiece, he shows Jesus Christ in the centre, illuminated by candlelight and a halo. Jesus breaks bread to share with his disciples who appear to be anxious and deep in discussion. They are vexed because Christ has just declared that one of them would betray him. Jesus appears to be glancing at Judas, who stands in the foreground.
