Light micrograph of the corpus cavernosum of the penis. The corpus cavernosum is one of the erectile tissues in the penis. It consists of fibrous and muscular tissue (pink) containing many blood vessels (white) which pool with blood and dilate during an erection. The corpus cavernosum is surrounded by a fibrous layer of tissue known as the tunica albuginea (horizontal pink band at top of image). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10cm.
