Light micrograph of gout. Gout is a disease where urate crystal accumulate in the body and can deposit in tissues causing pain and other symptoms. The gout crystals in this image (light blue-pink) occupy most of the top half of the image. The bottom of the image shows the fibrous soft tissue (darker pink) in which the gout crystals have deposited. Between the gout crystals and fibrous tissue are several multinucleated giant cells (pink with several dark blue dots), which are part of the inflammatory reaction elicited by the body in response to the crystal deposition. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10cm.
