Light micrograph of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency liver disease. In this hereditary disease, the body does not produce adequate levels of the alpha-1-antitrypsin enzyme, which leads to emphysema in the lungs and liver damage that can progress to cirrhosis. The histologic hallmark of the disease in the liver is the presence of globules (light pink circular structures) within liver cells. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10cm.
