The epidermis also contains melanin pigment (brown at bottom of purple layer). The layer of skin deeper to the epidermis is the dermis, which is composed of collagen fibres (pink occupying top fourth to bottom of image). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10cm.
